The true spirit of italian south you can find only in a few regions of Italy and one of them is Basilicata:still not very well known south italian destination. In ancient times it belonged to the most developed italian regions (Magna Grecia – Metaponto) and in the Middle Ages there was a great number of castle architecture. Nowadays, the region is a popular place – especially for lovers of mountain massifs lying on the clear Ionian coast and a bit of Tyrrhenian Sea as well. Visitors from all over the world yearly visit mainly the town of Matera with its rocky dwellings called sassi and also typical dishes: spicy food, pasta in many ways (often with ginger, vegetables or minced pork), strong cheeses, excellent olive oil and typical dried peppers, this is just some of the food you can taste here. Tastefull wines are Agliano del Vulture (typical red), Malvasia or Moscato (sweet and sparkling wines). The city of Matera is really proud to host a special event – for the year 2019 it was chosen as a city of culture and many interesting accompanying programs will be prepared here. Whoever visits Basilicata on the Tyrrhenian coast of Maratea will be able to admire the fourth largest statue of Christ in the world.
