The region, over 400 kilometers long, occupies the southern part of Italy including the heel of its imaginary boot. Because of this location it has been frequently attacked and occupied in history by various powers, from the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs to the Normans and the Spaniards. Thanks to these dominions the region got its distinctive character and many monuments left after these powers: in Bari we can find one of the most impressive Arabian quarters, the whole coastline is flanked by Norman strongholds, and several cities have gained their unique appearance thanks to the Spanish Baroque. Although we can find here many beautiful cities and places (Alberobello appears on every postcard from Puglia), the region is particularly visited for its beautiful sandy beaches that stretch from the northern peninsula of Gargano to the southern untouched white Salento beaches. Local specialities include various fish and seafood treatments (Taranta mussels are the great example), but also lamb and kidding are used a lot. The region also excels in the production of homemade pasta, olive oil and almond milk, which is a great refreshment during hot summer days. Local wines, especially Red Primitivo or White Locorotondo, are also excellent.
